Faculty Emeriti

Reid A. Bates, PhD
Professor Emeritus, School of Leadership & Human Resource Development

image of Reid BatesDr. Bates served as Director of SLHRD until his retirement in 2021, capping a career that combined LSU teaching and research with hands-on international workforce development work across the globe.

Dr. Bates earned his PhD in Human Resource & Leadership Development from LSU and built a career that stretched well beyond the classroom. He began his career as a U.S. Peace Corps volunteer from 1985 to 1989, an experience that shaped a lifelong focus on workforce training and development in international settings. He went on to hold roles including Training Coordinator with Oregon State University's Office of International Research & Development, Director of Workforce Training and Education at the College of the Marshall Islands, and a Human Resources for Health consultant with Tulane University's Payson Center for International Development. In 2009, he served as a Fulbright Scholar at the International University of Management in Windhoek, Namibia. At LSU, his research on training transfer and learning systems — much of it in collaboration with colleague Dr. Ed Holton — has been cited thousands of times and remains foundational to the field. He led SLHRD as Director until his retirement in 2021.

Elwood "Ed" Holton, EdD
Professor Emeritus, School of Leadership & Human Resource Development

image of ed holtonDr. Holton built one of the most decorated research careers in the school's history, and returned to LSU as Director from 2024 to 2025 before his second retirement.

Dr. Holton served as the Jones S. Davis Distinguished Professor of Human Resource, Leadership, and Organization Development at LSU, where he coordinated the school's B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. programs and later served as Special Assistant to the LSU Chancellor for Workforce Development. A charter member of the Academy of Human Resource Development (AHRD) and one of its Past Presidents, he spent seven years on the AHRD Board of Directors. His research centered on workforce development policy and the systems that determine whether training actually translates into on-the-job performance — work that earned him the Academy's Outstanding HRD Scholar award in 2002, induction into the International Adult and Continuing Education Hall of Fame in 2004, the Richard A. Swanson Research Excellence Award in 2008, and eventual induction into the AHRD Scholar Hall of Fame. After his initial retirement, Dr. Holton returned to LSU to serve as Director of SLHRD from 2024 to 2025, once again leading the school before his second retirement.
